The Story of Laurent Gbagbo

The Story of Laurent Gbagbo, Stephen W. Smith

An enlightening essay regarding the complexity of an obscure news story, that did not receive the attention of the "Arab Spring," yet might prove more indicative of the state of global politics today.

  1. Very interesting to read the history leading up to this event -- it shows how many components play a role in the actions (or inaction) of the state and international community.

I was unaware of Ivory Coast's immigrant population. I wonder if that makes the citizenry more divided or maybe even apathetic towards nationalism. I remember hearing people talk about Gbagbo vs. Ouattara as a Christian vs. Muslim issue. But it seems to have been more of a nationalistic, power hungry ruler vs. a leader more in tune with the globalizing world.
